Hello everyone and welcome to Anything Anime, I want to start off by saying I am very sorry for how long it was in between posts, but I just started a new job and it was kicking my ass, but I’m here now and I am doing a twofer for ya’ll. So without further adieu, here is…
So what do I say about DNA²? I guess I should start by saying something positives about the show, so here are a couple good things about this show.
Probably one of the best things about this show is that they got Liam O’Brien for the main character of the show Junta Momonari. If you guys are fans of anime the name Liam O’Brien will sound familiar because he is the voice of Gaara of the Sand in Naruto. He’s an amazing voice actor and actually probably the only really good performance in this show. The show was dubbed in ’94 and at that time not much was invested in making mouth flaps with the voice, or in acting for that matter so to see a performance like his just four anime in for him makes for a good performance.
I want to preface this by saying this is completely my thoughts on this anime and should be viewed as such, but with that being said I’m going to just go straight out and say the animation style is not a personal favorite of mine. Everyone knows what old school anime looks like, and I guess as I grow older and get spoiled more and more by newer, cleaner, anime it’s what I have grown to enjoy. This is more of a personal thing for me, and should in no way sway you’re viewing of it if it’s your thing.
I was going to continue by saying that the rest of the voice acting in this isn’t done all that well but as I mentioned above this was ’94, and I think it’s more of the direction compared to the voice actors involved. I’ve seen a lot of the names mentioned and they have been in some of the biggest animes around, but as I said the direction just wasn’t really there in 1994 so while this does hurt the show at times it’s not as big of a deal.
I can’t say I enjoyed this anime at all. I got to about episode 6 and I suffered all the way to the final episode. I can’t say I enjoyed myself while watching the show and honestly that surprises me because I very rarely find an anime that I don’t like. There is one thing though I find funny this anime is very infamous if you’re a Newgrounder, back in the day when the site had a mature section one of the premiere Dating Sims on the site was known as Sim Girl, you played a guy who was a loser nobody and you built yourself up to become a Mega Playboy. The basic story line of Sim Girl is the same as DNA², and it wasn’t until I was doing research on the subject that I realized it.
Yes, I’m a perv, and yes I spent many many hours back in the day on Newgrounds so not only had I known of Sim Girl, I had played it once upon a time. When I made the connection between the game and the anime I had decided to search the site for the game to possibly give a review on that but it seems like it’s gone now and I can’t but I will say this brought back memories.
So I guess the final thing to decide would be if I would suggest this anime to other people and the answer is honestly no, I wouldn’t, I just didn’t enjoy it, but remember thats just my opinion on the matter.
Record of Lodoss War
Now we jump from one old anime to an even older anime. The Record of Lodoss War is an anime based off of a RPG like system similar to Dungeons and Dragons, this is actually something I learned while doing research about the anime and I found it pretty interesting, unfortunately thats where the interest on my part ended. So lets just straight in.
The animation on Lodoss is a lot smoother than the animation for DNA² is but it is still done in the old style and just does not really interest me, but with that being said I’m still putting the animation in the positive section just based off the fact that for being done in 1990 the animation would have been ahead of it’s time compared to other shows coming out around that time, and while it may not be my cup of tea, I can’t put them down for that feat.
Pretty much everything else, remember this is just my thoughts and if you watch it you may think different, but I found it boring, I struggled through 13 episodes and thats normally not a hard thing for me to do when it comes to anime. The characters to me are find, they just seemed very boring, the voice acting was very forced and just not all that well done. I will concede that this is probably because it was done in the 90’s and once again anime direction was probably a key factor behind that.
I really wanted to enjoy this anime, I had heard of it for years, but could never find it, when it was suggested to me I was excited and sadly I just did not really like it, and that really made me sad because I wanted to like one of the first two anime’s I watched for this and thought Record of Lodoss War was going to be the one I did.
So would I suggest this anime? Ya know I would, while it wasnt my cup of tea, it might be someone else, give the first couple episodes a look and see for yourself.
So a couple of snoozers for me this week and I’m sorry about that but from now on it’ll be all anime I’ll be picking out, and I think I might just do something from the past couple years for the next one, so what will it be? You’ll just have to wait and see, so util then..
